Welcome back to our blog! Last time, we began looking at ways you can protect your young athlete from suffering a sports-related injury. As we mentioned in part one, sports injuries are the leading cause of emergency room visits among children of all ages. At Blaine Health & Wellness, our team of medical specialists and practitioners are devoted to educating our patients and readers in and around Blaine about the importance of taking precautions to prevent sports injuries in children and adolescents. As a wellness center that treats people of all ages with chiropractic care and physical therapy, we have seen it all when it comes to sports injuries. Here are some tips for you to consider for protecting your child from sports injuries.

Get a Preseason Physical

No matter what sports or recreational activity your child or adolescent participates in, taking them for a preseason physical is a must. Consulting with your team of DMR Method doctors and practitioners can help them avoid injuries. A physical exam will allow your doctor to determine if they are physically fit for participating in sports while giving them the opportunity to flag any health conditions or ailments that could be exacerbated by physical activity.

Encourage Rest

Children and adolescents have an unwavering amount of energy. This can make it challenging to get them to rest when they need it. Ensure they get plenty of rest before and after a game or event, and in-between practices. This can help limit muscle and joint fatigue and overuse. The most common sports-related injuries in children and teens are those related to overuse and repetition.

Adult Supervision is a Must

Try to encourage your child or teen to participate in sports where an adult will be present. In solitary sports like skateboarding and BMX biking, there is less adult supervision, which can place your child in greater danger should they become injured. While these are both incredible sports, coordinate with other parents to ensure that an adult can be there to keep an eye on the young daredevils.

Schedule Wellness Treatments

Call Blaine Health & Wellness to schedule your young athlete for regular wellness visits that may include chiropractic care, massage therapy, and physical therapy in Blaine.
